I’m eyeing to paint the stone guards of the KC lights (example below) to match the rest of the van’s aesthetic: teal. I’ve used the same brand of plastidip on all of the accents. Doing some quick research, plastidip is rated up to 300F, but I am seeing varying results for the halogen light temperature. There are factors that play, wattage, housing, distance, etc.

I came across a page measuring different heat outputs for different light sources for terrariums. A 100 watt spot light produced 270F of heat measures 12 inches from the source, and 187F from a similar light but with a flood pattern. My lights are spread beam, and obviously the stone guard is mounted directly on the housing. This test was also done with the light source uncovered in a traditional heat lamp housing, so heat was able to come directly outward. The KC lights are enclosed, so that housing is soaking all that heat.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Worst case ontario, I can look aorund for a very similar paint with a higher temperature threshold.

BBQ paint and not have to worry about it?

Given that you are a lot closer than 12" and presumably that cage is made of nice heat conducting metal, I think it’s safe to assume it’s going to get a lot hotter than your test examples, though I have no idea if it will be too hot for plastidip.

Worst case ontario

In many ways, yes

Powder coat or enamel spray paint rated for engine blocks

That paint doesn’t come in teal. That’s my issue. I’d leave em be if I’m going black with the white lettering. But I wanted to paint the grills teal and leave the lettering white.

I was going to say the same thing.

VHT makes a similar color, and I’m not picky about it being EXACTLY matching. I just wanted to see if I could avoid buying more cans. I’d probably buy a can and avoid the worry.

unless these are tail lights i can think of a lot of very small reasons not to use plastidip

Seriously though, I've been use more crinkle paint for that kind of stuff. High heat resistance and without the hassles of powder coating

Do you have an infrared thermometer?

Glass is a pretty good thermal insulator. I doubt those guards are getting anywhere near 300F otherwise they’d also probably warp or melt (they’re plastic, right?).

The stone guards are ABS plastic

I would imagine if it’s safe for the plastic, it’s going to be safe for the plastidip (but don’t blame me if your van catches on fire!)

From what I can quickly gather, ABS plastic has a melting point of around 220F, so if they don’t melt, the Plastidip should be ok.
